Mike Pompeo: Soleimani was killed as part of a wider deterrence strategy

Washington-East January 14: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that Iranian General Qasim Soleimani was killed as part of a broader strategy to deter challenges posed by US opponents that also apply to China and Russia.

In a speech at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, Pompeo said that there is a greater strategy behind the killing of Soleimani and that is the Iranian foreign espionage unit and the paramilitary force in the Revolutionary Guards. They support the American military presence in their country despite public calls for the exit of American soldiers from Iraq. Pompeo added that the US administration will deal with elected Iraqi leaders to reach a decision about our presence there.
