188 Alliance condemns threats against amendment of Personal Status Law

Baghdad - ALsharqiya, August 12: The 188 Alliance rejected the campaign of distortion and threats targeting those who reject the amendment of the Personal Status Law. The alliance, which includes a number of civil society organizations, issued a statement saying that it is following the latest developments regarding attempts to amend the law and distort the position of those who reject it, and that it affirms its absolute rejection of amending the law because this will lead to the deterioration of social relations, differ constitutional articles, and divide society along sectarian and religious lines. The alliance pointed out that the influential parliamentary blocs seek to divide society according to the approach of religious, sectarian, national, intellectual, political, and social quotas, stressing that the 188 Alliance’s defense of the law in force for the year 1959 is a defense of the Iraqi constitution, and a defense of the national state, civil life, and citizenship, against entrenchment and sectarian and religious isolation.
